The Zero Harm team at GTR has produced a 30-minute e-learning training package on Suicide Prevention and making a safe intervention. This e-learning has been made available for all 7400 staff and is proving a success with 10{08402cc4e02dcaebae1e086294c932f9e8c0e4836b71c17abd5ce9cddb0123b9} of the company undertaking this training within the first two weeks of it going live.
Whilst GTR has an ambition to train all front line staff in its half day Caring for the Vulnerable course, it’s recognised that anyone can make a lifesaving intervention so this is the first time that a course of this nature has been made accessible to all staff, both front-line and Managers.
Laura Campbell, Suicide Prevention Manager for GTR said ‘It is imperative that we work together to help vulnerable people on our trains, in our stations and for that matter anywhere they may be. We need to work together to help prevent suicide. I am excited that everyone in the company is able to complete this short training which will equip them with the confidence and steps to take to approach someone safely that is potentially in need of help.’
‘The course which incorporates videos, quizzes and is interactive has been praised by staff saying it is very informative and quick to complete. Most importantly, feedback is that having completed the course, most would feel more comfortable approaching someone who may look vulnerable’ said Samantha Facey, Head of Zero Harm Strategy.
The training complements the Samaritans Managing Suicidal Contacts course and GTR continues to support Samaritans in developing and promoting this course.
