Netflix has announced on 16 July that it will cut the controversial suicide scene from the teen drama series 13 Reasons Why, after researchers identified a rise in suicides.

The first series released in 2017, concluded with the character Hannah Baker, taking her own life.

Mental health campaigners criticised Netflix for showing the suicide method, warning that it could encourage copycat attempts by vulnerable young viewers.

Research backed up concerns and found suicides among young Americans, rose by nearly a third in the month the drama was launched, although a direct casual link could not be established.

An extra warning was included at the start of the series, but after pressure from medical experts, the graphic scene has been removed.

The decision was welcomed by Samaritans and comes before the launch of the third series.
